Hunters claim the wildlife-killing contests protect endangered prey animals

Petition creator Lavinia Rojas said she’s shooting for a meeting with Forests Minister Doug Donaldson to deliver her petition, which she started about four weeks ago after learning about the contests.

The letter mentioned three contests, including a predator tournament organized by the Creston Valley Rod and Gun Club, a “wolf whacking” contest in the Chilcotin and a $500 bounty for wolves killed by members of the The West Kootenay Outdoorsmen. In response to a Global News story about the contests, Donaldson said the ministry does not condone contests, but there are no rules “preventing these types of contests providing the hunters are properly licensed and all laws are followed.”The minister’s response also noted “wolf populations are healthy and self-sustaining throughout the province.”
