'That first month I was here it was just trying to slow the game down. It was so fast, everything sped up so quick, it was tough.' In Mike Trout's experiences, the BlueJays can find insight into the early career arc for Guerrero Jr. (ShiDavidi)

arrived in California this week, the scene was very familiar to someone now widely regarded as the best player in the game.

"I wouldn’t say it was as much as Vladdy, but there was attention, there was pressure," Trout said Wednesday, before delivering a critical three-run double in a 6-3 victory. "That first month I was here it was just trying to slow the game down. It was so fast, everything sped up so quick, it was tough. At the time, it wasn’t good for me when I got sent back down, but realizing what I needed to do to get back up here and preparing myself helped me in the long run.

Indeed, Trout’s first stay in the majors lasted only three weeks, during which he batted .163/.213/.279 in 14 games, before the Angels sent him back to Arkansas for a reset. He was only there for 16 games, picking up where he left off by batting .333/.408/.587, and was back in the majors Aug. 19, performing at a far more respectable .250/.318/.450 clip over the final 26 games.

The next year Trout spent three weeks at triple-A Salt Lake City before rejoining the Angels on April 28. He hasn’t looked back since."Slowing the game down," Trout reiterates. "Obviously you put a lot of pressure on yourself. Vladdy was tearing up the minor-leagues. He’s had a few hits here and there, but he’s hitting the ball hard. He’ll be fine in the long run. There’s a lot of pressure, especially for him being a No. 1 prospect, and his dad a Hall of Famer.
