Internal sources within the Democratic Alliance (DA) reveal growing discontent with John Steenhuisen's leadership. Rumors circulate about a potential coup led by Helen Zille aimed at removing Steenhuisen from his position and replacing him with Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis. While Steenhuisen secured reelection as DA leader in 2023, his leadership style has drawn criticism, particularly after entering government. Despite speculation about an early leadership challenge, DA Federal Chairperson Ivan Meyer insists that the party constitution mandates an elective conference at least every three years, with the next one scheduled for April 2026.

Though he is currently the Government of National Unity's Minister of Agriculture, there has been increasing conjecture about his party leadership. However, DA federal chairperson Ivan Meyer dismissed the claims, saying the constitution prescribed an elective conference at least every three years.
