Police in Houston say that a man was killed Thursday night after he attempted to intervene as a group of men were trying to shoot his neighbor.

Police responded to a call about a shooting at an apartment complex after 9 p.m. and found the 23-year-old victim with gunshot wounds, according to a Friday news release from the city. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers were advised there was an argument between multiple armed male suspects and a couple. The victim was said to have intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. The suspects opened fire and struck the victim multiple times," the Houston Above, Houston police vehicles are seen at a crime scene on May 15.The victim's identity is still pending until his family is notified by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, police said.

Local news station KTRK reported that police said the group went to the apartment complex intending to a shoot a different man, and had been at the apartment for 30 minutes carrying guns. "From what we are being told, he walked over there, actually got in between [the] gunmen and their intended target and some other folks that were there," Houston Police Lieutenant R. Willkens said, according to the news station."He was telling them, from what I understand, some of our witnesses were telling us he said, 'If y'all want to fight, fight, but put the guns up.' Evidently they didn't.
