She's inspired by the photos of Edward Burtynsky.
“I’m known for the cone people,” O’Neill says with a laugh. “They dictate scale. People overlook safety cones, no one thinks they’re important, so I like to give them a bit of a presence.
“I search out what will probably be gone the next day. And I love the high contrast of concrete versus the natural environment. How concrete and manmade structures can look out of place,” she says.“I wanted to get it before they added too much to clean it, so it has that grittiness, unfinished feel to it. It has the framework — the steel, no doors in it, so there are these weird spaces.
O’Neill is currently studying for her Masters of Architecture at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism at Carleton University and working as a full-time artist, and her work is drawing attention. “They said it was the most Ottawa painting ever,” she says. “It’s funny because you think about Ottawa scenes and you think of Parliament Hill or the canal. But it was the transit station that they saw every day that they wanted to remember.”
