LARISSA, Greece - The station master involved in Greece’s worst-ever train disaster was due to appear in court on Saturday, with the country bracing itself for more mass protests over the crash that killed at least 57 people.The incident involved a passenger train and a freight train near Larissa, in central Greece.More demonstrations were expected in several major cities on Saturday.
The station master at Larissa has admitted responsibility for the incident, which saw the two trains run along the same track for several kilometres. Thousands gathered outside the Athens headquarters of operators Hellenic Train on Saturday to protest at decades of failure to improve rail network safety, despite close calls in past years.
A similar number demonstrated in Thessaloniki – Greece’s second largest city – where police had reported clashes on Thursday with demonstrators throwing stones and petrol bombs.
