All fire services are on 'high alert' in Greece as a heatwave sweeps southern Europe
Greece’s fire services are on ‘high alert’ after more than 40 wildfires broke out in the country on Wednesday. The country has experienced soaring temperatures in recent days with weather warnings issued as a heatwave sweeps across southern Europe.
It reports that a wildfire has been burning in a forest area near Sofiko, Corinth, in the Peloponnese, advancing towards Epidaurus. The news site added: “The blaze, burning through dense pine forest, presents significant challenges. Authorities have issued an emergency alert, urging Sofiko residents to remain vigilant.”It said that three firefighters sustained minor burns and were hospitalised in Corinth.
Meteorologists said the hot air from Africa was forecast to continue through until Sunday, with heatwave temperatures expected to peak at 43C . In Albania, the heat led the government to reschedule working hours for civil servants, making it easier for some to work from home.
