The votes are in, and a stretch of sidewalk featuring a utility pole and two trees has been deemed the worst in the region.
Walk On, Victoria’s Janky June contest — janky being slang for poor quality — asked residents to nominate and vote on the worst sidewalks and the worst areas without sidewalks in the region.
Dozens of streets were nominated, but results of online voting revealed the 4100-block of Cedar Hill Road in Saanich — where pedestrians and those with mobility scooters have to twist and turn between two trees and a utility pole while traffic whizzes by less than a metre away — as the worst sidewalk.
The dubious honour of “jankiest lack of sidewalk” also went to Saanich and the area of Cedar Hill Cross Road at Cedar Hill Road. There is a sidewalk across the road, but the “janky” side is just a thin path of padded gravel crowded by overflowing vegetation. Walk On, Victoria, formed in September 2014, promotes safe, comfortable pedestrian infrastructure around the region.
The organization said its “mission is to improve the safety and enjoyability of Greater Victoria’s walking conditions and promote walking as a healthy, sustainable form of transportation and recreation.
