A man from Oldham is fighting for Russia in Ukraine. Ben Stimson is in the Donbas region with Vladimir Putin's forces, the Mirror reports.
Former British Army commander Colonel Richard Kemp said: "These two are an absolute disgrace and are traitors who upon their return to the UK should be arrested and jailed." He claimed he was 'a working class man with no work', and said he was prepared to kill on the frontline in 'an act of war'. Stimson was arrested on arrival back in the UK and jailed for five years and four months in 2017 after admitting assisting others in committing terrorism acts.
He was detained at Manchester Airport, questioned under the terrorism act, and had his phones and laptop confiscated. But he was still allowed to fly to Moscow via Istanbul. He wrote: "Cost me £1,450 after police took me off first plane and took phones and laptops." "He's been a constant worry. I want a bit of peace at my age. You never know what he'll do next." In an online post, Stimson once wrote: "My father is an a*****e, he treats his dog better than his children. He is the one who told the police I was in Donetsk. He also supports Kiev."
Minnis, 37, told the Mirror: "My family heritage is from Ireland and I have Irish family. But also an ideological thing." Stimson describes him 'a good guy', but he is a former drug addict with a long criminal record. In 2006, Minnis, admitted beating up relatives of a driver whose dangerous driving had caused the deaths of his cousin and girlfriend in Chippenham, Wilts. In December 2008 he was jailed for a racist attack.
