Jack Grealish backed up Pep Guardiola's assertion that both he and Jeremy Doku can play in the same Manchester City side with his performance vs Young Boys.
Having praised Jeremy Doku at the weekend as a 'star in this house for years to come', the line of questioning to Guardiola soon turned to Jack Grealish's lack of game-time with Doku taking his spot on the left-wing. "Jeremy can play on the right," was Guardiola's immediate response.
The pair had only shared 28 minutes on the pitch so far this season across three substitute appearances, as Guardiola has avoided two traditional wingers in the same system on the most part. Instead, one has tended to hug the touchline, while another has inverted inside with Kyle Walker bombing up the wing.
In the first half, they backed up Guardiola's claim that they can play in the same line-up, with seven crosses and three shots on target between them. Towards the end of the half, Guardiola swapped them around and both tested the goalkeeper on their opposite side. This was a pair of wingers who gave Guardiola what he had last season. When Riyad Mahrez was at the Etihad, Guardiola could rotate between Mahrez, Grealish, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden for a pair who could cut inside, drive to the byline, or attract attention before creating an overload on the opposite side.
