Approximately 30 people protested outside the offices of Batchewana First Nation to ensure their voices were heard regarding the Robinson Huron Treaty annuities claim

Batchewana First Nation offices were evacuated as a safety measure Tuesday due to a peaceful protest scheduled by a group of grandmothers and their supporters.

The perpetual annuity is paid annually by the Crown to individual members of the 21 First Nations in the Robinson Huron Treaty. At the conclusion of the trials currently being heard, there is a possibility future annuities payments will far exceed the $4 currently being paid. At issue for the group is a possible change in not only the amount of the annuities being paid, but also how that money changes hands from the Crown to individual band members.Women Who Walk Softly group member Brenda Sayers said what little information has been communicated from chief and council has been disturbing.

”They found the chiefs weren’t doing that so the Crown took the role back and started to give to every band member every year,” said Brenda. The group is concerned any adjustment of the annuities payments will be negotiated to go through an intermediary, severing the direct payment from Crown to individual band member.
