Lucinda Russell's 10-year-old on course for return to Aintree to try and win back-to-back Grand Nationals
Corach Rambler is said to be "really well" ahead of his bid to become the 10th dual winner of the Randox Grand National at Aintree Racecourse a week on Saturday.
And his connections are looking forward to trying to add his name even more indelibly in the Grand National hall of fame with a second success. Russell, speaking exclusively to the Liverpool ECHO courtesy of William Hill at Aintree Racecourse today, said: "He is really good. He has actually improved for it . We actually wanted it to tighten him up for the National. He has come out of it really well.
"You always worry about horses going back to run over the fences. I think even going back chasing after the National there is a concern. Grand National winners haven't got a great record of winning again after it, so sometimes it does take it out of them. But he is a very intelligent horse and he works it out. Hopefully he will again.
Russell added: "It was actually worse, in a way, than last year. It was much worse. He got a whip ban and we were all worried it was going to take him to miss the race. But it is was only for being over the number once, so they deferred the hearing and it wouldn't have affected the National anyway. But that gave us about 48 hours of anxiety and worry of whether he would get to the race.
"It shows you don't have to spend fortunes. They are a really good group and one of them is originally from Glasgow but lives in Australia. He flew in for the race, cancelled his flight the next day and stayed on for a day or two to enjoy the party. They will all be back again following the horse. It is just great.
