A strong low pressure system in northern Canada has been funneling Arctic air into Alberta since Monday, but this is expected to break by Friday.
A strong low pressure system in northern Canada has been funneling Arctic air into Alberta since Monday.
Ridges of high pressure south of Alaska and south of Ontario have locked this pattern in, allowing the trough to deepen across the western Prairies. As expected temperatures hit their lowest point Thursday with some communities in southern Alberta waking up to an ambient temperature of -20C and wind chill values in the mid-minus 20s.As things level off and that low tracks east, Calgary should see daytime highs approach freezing, and by Halloween the daytime high is expected to hit single digits. This week's freezing rain and snow in Calgary pushed the city well-past the normal precipitation totals for the month of October.
As of end of day Oct. 25, Environment and Climate Change Canada was reporting Calgary had already measured 35.2 millimetres of precipitation for the month of October – which is normally the fifth driest month in the city.A mild north wind on Thursday will continue to produce a gap between the ambient and 'feels like' temperature, but at least the worst is over.
