Professor Anthony Harnden, deputy chair of JCVI, also believes it remains imperative that older people and those considered most at risk of a severe illness from Covid continue to take the threat of infection seriously.

Experts say the threat of a more deadly variant of Covid spreading throughout the population remains. One that still could cause serious illness even in those who have received all their vaccine doses. Professor Jeremy Brown of University College London, who is also a member of the JCVI, said he believes the chances of any further lockdowns are “pretty much zero”.

Professor Graham Medley, who sits on Sage and is chairman of its sub-committee, the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling, said: “I think another wave of infections is highly likely. A new variant that is more pathogenic might turn that wave into one that challenges healthcare capacity and causes more death and disease.
