The acquisition process for the new planes was supposed to start next year with the delivery of the first aircraft in 2027. But in 2017 the Liberal government announced it was extending the life of the Twin Otters, also known as CC-138s. Structural components, namely the wings, were replaced on the aircraft. That process will allow the Twin Otters to fly until at least 2025, according to National Defence.

The avionics on the aircraft will also be eventually updated but no timeline was provided for that process.Article content The Twin Otters have been the military’s workhorses for Arctic operations for decades. They are considered well suited for the north because of the aircraft’s ability to conduct short take offs and landings as well as landing on ice and snow, according to National Defence.Article content
