The extension will allow another 1,000 people to get permanent residency and address a labour shortage in Canada.

In 2019, the Liberals launched a pilot program that allows out of status construction workers in the Greater Toronto Area to apply to stay as permanent residents. Siobhán Vipond, executive vice-president of the CLC, said many workers who don’t have status fear reprisal if they speak out about unsafe working conditions or about unpaid overtime.“This program will assist us in making sure that they’re not exposed to all the vulnerabilities that come with being out of status,” she said.Article content
