The National Assembly has unanimously adopted the Criminal Law Amendment Bill, with opposition MPs questioning why it took the ANC government so long to bring the legislation to Parliament. | gerbjan

While the National Assembly unanimously adopted a Bill that would allow the state to gather the DNA of serious offenders, opposition MPs lamented that crimes had been committed against women and children by rapists and murders who would have been in the system if the executive hadn't dithered with the drafting of the Bill.

In one of the rare occurrences where all parties support a Bill, the National Assembly on Tuesday adopted the Criminal Law Amendment Bill. This Bill, once enacted, will make it compulsory for Schedule 8 offenders – which includes crimes like rape, murder, human trafficking, robbery and culpable homicide – to provide buccal samples to be stored on a convicted offenders' database.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
