Michigan appears to be the first state to create a panel to address racial disparities seen during the pandemic, but the issue is a nationwide problem.
In addition to studying the disparities in the impact of the coronavirus, the task force’s goals include suggesting ways to:Remove barriers to accessing proper physical and mental health care, both during a pandemic and following it.Mitigate environmental and structural racism that contributes to Black and brown residents being more exposed during pandemics resulting in the risk of death.
Gilchrist said that the task force will “take action in real time” instead of issuing a report much later. The group will work until 90 days have passed since the declared states of emergency and disaster, or until Whitmer announces another date. , Michigan had at least 32,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, an increase of 576 since the day before. The state also now has reported 2,469 deaths, an increase of 77 since Sunday.Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist has been put in charge of the state's effort to study the disporportionate effects of the coronavirus on Black and brown communtiies.

But the federal data didn’t have racial information for 75% of all cases and did not include any demographic breakdown of deaths.
