Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has announced a new shareholder model for state-owned companies.Gordhan said there had been a dramatic improvement in Eskom’s performance.

The holding company will embrace government’s commercial entities that engage in business activities, such as Eskom and Transnet. The Presidential State-owned Enterprise Council has recommended the proposed model. "This [will] separate the state’s ownership functions from its policy and regulatory functions, minimise the scope for political interference, introduce greater professionalism, and manage state assets in a way that protects shareholder value.

The National Treasury has made clear that it was not consulted in the choice of SAA’s strategic partner.
