But in between praise for Morgan’s toughness, Marcus Luttrell also took thinly veiled shots at Christian Collins, his brother’s much-younger rival in the March 1 Republican primary.
The 11-candidate Republican primary to succeed retiring congressman Kevin Brady has divided conservatives in Houston and Washington, with the vast majority of local officials, donors and deep-pocketed outside groups lining up behind either Collins or Morgan Luttrell.
“The question for this district, Congressional District 8, is not whether we will elect a Republican, because we will. It’s what type of Republican,” Collins said. “My race isn’t about me versus the other guy, or whatever. This race is about the people versus the Washington establishment, the globalists, the uniparty.”
Morgan Luttrell, a congressional candidate, speaks during his campaign rally Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, at Honor Cafe in Conroe.“I don’t agree with anything Adam says politically anymore. But that man is not a traitor to his country. He fought in a war for his country,” Luttrell said, before turning to Collins. “ Did you? No, you didn’t.”
Congressional candidate Christian Collins stands on stage with U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene during his campaign rally Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, at Grace Woodlands in The Woodlands. With less than a week left of early voting, the race has seen a cascade of outside spending, led by a $593,000 infusion from the McCarthy-aligned super PAC last week to fund a TV ad promoting Luttrell.
Four other GOP candidates had raised between $17,000 and $44,000 since the start of the campaign: former Navy helicopter pilot Dan McKaughan, businesswoman Candice Burrows, Willis public works director Taylor Whichard and Jessica Wellington, a former district director for retired congressman Ted Poe. The four remaining candidates had not reported any fundraising.
