The White House attempted Thursday to shift the blame for stratospheric inflation numbers to Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite the fact that the surge in gas prices driving the overall increase was underway long before Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
“A large contributor to inflation this month was an increase in gas and energy prices as markets reacted to Putin’s aggressive actions,” Biden’s statement went on. According to AAA, the average nationwide price for a gallon of gas rose to $4.318 Thursday, up from $4.252 Wednesday, $3.477 last month, and $2.815 at this time last year.
