Android TV is an operating system for media devices like TVs or set-top boxes that allows users to stream media through the device itself, and comes with built-in Google Assistant. The new expected additions to the second-generation Chromecast Ultra would make the experience resemble more of a traditional TV streaming experience akin to Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV.
Google's reported improvements to the Chromecast Ultra could help the tech giant grow its following in the smart home space. Google's decision to bring the Android TV OS to its Chromecast Ultra devices means that connected TVs can be controlled via Google Assistant, no matter their native operating system.
With more natural ways to use Google Assistant with the Chromecast Ultra, Google would join other tech giants as well as cable companies in finding new avenues to collect monetizable data on in-home voice usage. Just last month a model for a Comcast hands-free voice remote system was Amazon and Apple also have already integrated a voice assistant button into their respective streaming device remotes.
Google can leverage voice data from the Chromecast Ultra to refine user experiences or for targeted ads, as voice is a popular medium for consumers to control their TVs — controlling home media devices is a top use case for smart speakers, per Business Insider Intelligence's Emerging Technology Survey.Connectivity & Tech Pro
