However, the South African Photovoltaïc Industry Association (Sapvia) expects a big comeback for the technology in 2025 and 2026.
Around 58% less solar power capacity was installed in South Africa during 2024 than in the year before. However, a major industry body expects the technology will make a big comeback over the next two years.
During 2023, the capacity just about doubled to 5,200MW. However, in 2024, the figure only rose to roughly 6,200MW. That was down 71% from roughly $3.4 billion worth of imports of the same hardware in the first nine months of 2023. The industry body also believes that a national small-scale embedded generation framework will help standardise system registration and compliance across the country.
