The city will soon reveal more details about a more affordable bidirectional meter it has been testing.

The City of Cape Town says it has made “great” progress in testing more affordable bidirectional meters for households who want to feed electricity back into the grid.

“We are ordering sufficient quantity to sell it to you . Within the next six months or so, we will have a meter which is less than half that price,” said Hill-Lewis. Cape Town also reduced its advanced metering infrastructure reading fee from R96.20 to R5.66 per month.Cash-for-Power programme Municipal bills are credited automatically, with the option to apply to earn cash beyond a zero balance.

“If customers are interested in going above and beyond this, they can register and get cash for their power – where any remaining credit will accumulate until it reaches a certain amount and then the city will pay you out.”According to its latest tariffs schedule, Cape Town pays households roughly R1.29 for every kWh of fed-in electricity.
