Since government introduced a licence exemption of generation projects of 100 MW last August, the national energy regulator has registered 479 MW of new projects, analysis shows.

Most renewable energy projects which have been registered under the new licence exemption are solar PV.Since government raised the licence threshold for generation projects in August 2021, nearly 500 MW of new renewable energy projects have been registered by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa , analysis shows.

The regulatory change was one of the major steps government took to reduce load shedding. At the time, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantasheto raise the licence threshold to 100 MW. Initially, projects of 1MW were exempt from requiring a licence.
