GOLDSTEIN: Chattering class can’t handle truth about Trudeau’s carbon tax:
This is all explained in detail in the charts in Appendix A of the report, “Climate Action Incentive payments and household net costs.” Apparently, many in the chattering class didn’t read that far.But this time, former Greenpeace activist Steven Guilbeault, now Trudeau’s environment minister, grudgingly acknowledged in an interview with CTV’s Vassy Kapelos that, yes, most families end up paying more in carbon taxes than they get back in rebates. But, he insisted, the wealthiest pay more.
Gilbeault simply confirmed Giroux’s main finding that, “When both fiscal and economic impacts of the federal fuel charge are considered, we estimate that most households will see a net loss. Based on our analysis, most households will pay more in fuel charges and GST — as well as receiving slightly lower incomes — than they will receive in Climate Action Incentive payments.
Um, no. The PBO has been saying since 2020 in a report praised by Ottawa’s chattering classes at the time, that when you consider only the fiscal impact of the carbon tax — dollars in, dollars out — most households end up better off. Giroux’s report was also erroneously criticized by the usual suspects for failing to include savings that will come from technological improvements in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and for failing to include the economic costs of inaction against climate change.
