The show – Sk8 to Elmin8 Cancer Cleveland – will include performances by Scott’s skating-star friends from the Team USA as well as two dozen local children.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Ohio native, 1984 Olympic gold medal figure skater and cancer survivor Scott Hamilton is hosting and emceeing a free ice-skating show on the Cleveland Foundation Rink in Public Square. The show – Sk8 to Elmin8 Cancer Cleveland -- will include performances by Scott’s skating-star friends from the Team USA as well as two dozen local children. The free, standing room-only show will take place from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 8.
Special guests for the show are Molly Cesanek and Yehor Yehorov, Team USA Ice Dancers coached by Olympians Charlie White and Tanith Belbin White. Children throughout Northeast Ohio were asked to help raise money to benefit the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation and the Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute. Those who raised the most money will skate in part of the two-hour program. By Tuesday afternoon, the children had raised almost $13,000. Donations will be accepted the night of the show.
After a career in men’s figure skating, Hamilton worked as a commentator for the sport. He is known as a strong supporter of cancer research. Hamilton survived testicular cancer and three recurring brain tumors. A 25-year survivor, Hamilton founded several educational and survivorship programs including Chemocare.com and the 4th Angel Mentoring Program.
Those who can’t attend Thursday can skate at The Cleveland Foundation Skating Rink on weekends through February 20. The rink will be open daily from December 20 through January 1.
