Five out of six Canadians believe the country is already in recession and more than half fear the economy will get worse this year, a new poll suggests.
is bleak — even though Canada is not technically in recession, defined as two consecutive quarters of the economy shrinking instead of growing.
Pollara surveyed 4,020 people across the country from Dec. 8 until Dec. 20. Online panel samples cannot be assigned a margin of error, but for comparison purposes, a random sample of this size would have one of plus or minus 1.6 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. A staggering two-thirds — 66 per cent — said “worried,” 43 per cent “upset,” 39 per cent “sad,” 39 per cent “pessimistic,” 24 per cent “resigned,” 18 per cent “ashamed” and 10 per cent “bored.”
One-quarter — 27 per cent — said they were “calm,” 25 per cent “optimistic,” 23 per cent “confident, 11 per cent “happy,” 10 per cent “proud,” five per cent “inspired” and four per cent “excited.” Six per cent had no feelings. In terms of household income, 50 per cent said they were falling behind, 33 per cent said they were keeping pace and 10 per cent were more than keeping pace.
The cost of prescriptions was a source of stress for 42 per cent of respondents, while 41 per cent said other health-care expenses.
