Global wine production is forecast to hit a 62-year low due to climate change, with severe weather events causing significant drops in vineyard productivity across Europe and the southern hemisphere.
Global wine production is expected to drop to its lowest level since 1961, with preliminary estimates predicting output between 227 million and 235 million hectolitres across 29 countries accounting for 85 percent of global production. The decrease is largely attributed to climatic disruptions, including extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, prolonged drought, and early frosts, leading to significant reductions in vineyard productivity.
European production, which contributes to 60 percent of the global total, is down 11 percent overall, with France facing a 23 percent drop in output. Italy and Spain also saw reductions, while Hungary and Portugal maintained levels closer to average. The southern hemisphere, producing about 20 percent of the world's wine, is experiencing its lowest output in two decades
