Microsoft users in South Africa were unable to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services on Friday morning, while flights were grounded in Europe and the US.

The exact impact on various airlines and airports is not yet clear, but Friday is gearing up to be chaotic – on a very busy day in parts of Europe.

By 10:20 there was still an elevated number of outage reports for Microsoft 365 in South Africa on network downtime reporting site Down Detector. - William BrederodeIrish airline Ryanair said Friday that it was experiencing network disruption due to a"global third party outage" amid a wave of technical glitches around the world.

American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and Allegiant Air grounded flights less than an hour after Microsoft said it resolved its cloud services outage that impacted several low-cost carriers. The outages rippled far and wide, with Spain reporting a"computer incident" at all its airports, while Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline by passenger numbers, warned passengers of potential disruptions which it said would affect"all airlines operating across the Network", though it did not specify the nature of the disruptions.

The incident was brought on by an issue at Crowdstrike, a cybersecurity firm, which Capitec said was a key technology service provider. "Importantly, we want to reassure our clients that their bank accounts and personal data remain secure and unaffected by this incident," the Capitec statement said.Travel has been disrupted across Europe. In Berlin, flights were halted and check-ins delayed. In the Netherlands, Schipol airport said it was affected and warned travellers to contact their airlines for details.
