Former NBA center Glen Davis was sentenced to 40 months in prison on Thursday for defrauding the league’s healthcare plan. He will also be subject to three years’ supervised release.
and indicted on federal fraud charges for allegedly defrauding the the NBA Players’ Health and Welfare Benefit Plan by submitted false reimbursement claims.by a jury in New York in November on charges of health care fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to make false statements and conspiracy to commit health care and wire fraud. The maximum sentenced he faced was 20 years in prison.
Davis submitted over $100,000 in fraudulent healthcare reimbursement claims as part of the scheme. In one instance, he claimed to have had dental work done in Los Angeles but tracking data from his cellphone showed that he was Davis, known as “Big Baby,” played eight years in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Clippers. He is best known for his time in Boston, where he won a championship in his rookie year.
More than 20 people have been convicted of criminal charges related to the widespread fraud. They include former players Alan Anderson, Keyon Dooling and Will Bynum.
