Amini died at Kasra Hospital in Tehran on Friday, after being taken into custody three days earlier by the regime’s notorious morality police
Mahsa Amini. That was her name. Say it out loud wherever you happen to be standing. Shout it from a busy street corner in Toronto. Say it to your fellow passengers on a bus in Vancouver. Say her name to yourself, quietly. Say it now, as you read this. It’s pointless, but do it anyway. Just say her name: Mahsa Amini.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
The authorities say Mahsa Amini died of a heart attack, or of some sort of epileptic episode. The independent news portal Iran International, however, reports that staff at the hospital say she arrived in such a battered condition that her life could not be saved. She appeared to have sustained several severe blows to her head. Her lungs had filled with blood. She was bleeding from the ears. She could not be revived.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly issued a statement saying that, “Canada calls for a full and transparent investigation into her death.” Yet there will be no such investigation. “We urge Iran to end all forms of harassment and discrimination against women, and to respect the right to peaceful protest,” she continued. Yet the regime will not do these things. The regime will not respect anybody’s rights to do anything.
The morality police will not be abolished. The party, Hezb-i Etemad-i Melli, also called for a repeal of the hijab law. The law won’t be repealed.
