Glasgow Union members and Labour councillors are set to go head-to-head in a charity football match to raise money forThe draw for this year’s Glasgow Mayday 5-aside football tournament has been completed with RMT, Unison, GMB branch 40, GMB Fountain House, NUJGMB, Scottish Greens, Scottish Labour and Living Rent all taking part in the fundraiser. And the draw will see union members face off against city councillors, including Labour’s council leader George Redmond.
The game will kick off at 2pm this Saturday, May 6 at the Palace of Arts in Bellahouston Park with players hoping to raise donations for Fans Supporting Food banks and GMB branch 40 sponsoring the event. Speaking about the tournament, GMB convenor, Chris Mitchell said: “Glasgow trade unions including the GMB branch 40 and the Scottish Labour party will be playing in a charity football match to raise money for food banks.
“Trade unions have fought for workers rights for years and on Saturday we will be looking for donations for the Fans Supporting Food banks initiative. “We completed the draw earlier this week and have been drawn against the Scottish Labour party which I am looking forward to. “Anyone can come along and support their local communities. It is sad that we need to rely on food banks in this day and age but people depend on them.
“The event is not ticketed but people can make a donation to raise money for the food banks. A lot of our union members are really struggling because of the number of strike days they have taken off. “It all comes together. This event, which is a fantastic cause, is basically trade unions supporting communities to try and build them back up again in this cost of living crisis. Those attending the match can make a donation to the food banks on the day.
