'They are treating us with contempt here. This is only the tip of the iceberg.'
Unions have warned strikes on the first day of the Cycling World Championships in Glasgow are “only the tip of the iceberg” — unless an improved pay offer is received.
Earlier this week, the GMB announced staff in schools, including cleaners and catering staff, were also prepared to walk out after rejecting the offer. Keir Greenaway, GMB Scotland senior organiser in public services, added: “Councils shouldn’t expect to put on first rate events if they are going to give their workers a second rate offer.”
Unions met with COSLA on Wednesday for further talks but Mr Greenaway said there “was no attempt by COSLA to try and avert industrial action”, which led to parking wardens, from the GMB and Unite, and Unite members at the Emirates Arena walking out. He added: “On one hand they are saying there is no money, on the other hand they’re saying they don’t want any help to get more money. They are treating us with contempt here.
