More than £11.6 million funding to convert the former St James’ Primary in Calton into the city’s fourth Gaelic medium primary school has been approved.

Members of Glasgow’s City Administration Committee agreed to help fund the project, which is costing more than £22.8 million, to transform the abandoned site. Money for the project will also be made available from the Scottish Gaelic Grant and Learning Estate Investment funding. The cost of the building, which is to be named Bun-Sgoil Ghaidhlig a’ Chailtainn, has not only risen because of delays by Covid but by the building being in a worse condition than expected and hyper-inflation.The local authority has also approved funding of £5.9 million to renovate and extend additional support needs school Linburn Academy which is more than 50 years old.

“When will local children be able to register? I am sure that local people will be really interested when the school opens.” An education officer said: “We can get the details on the catchment area and yes it will be open to anybody in the catchment area to apply to register in the school.”
