Gerry Bitten-O’Prey was left stranded his top-floor flat as his seven-year-old boy watched in horror from the street below

A dad told how he was trapped in a burning building for 40 minutes while his son looked on helplessly. Gerry Bitten-O’Prey was sleeping in his top floor flat in the Dennistoun area of Glasgow when the blaze broke out on the first level.

He told Glasgow Live: “I noticed the dogs had a terrified look on their faces then I looked up through a glass panel above the door and it was just black with smoke. I opened the door and the smoke just started pouring into the flat. “My husband and son arrived back from the Fort and were standing on the street looking up at me terrified while I was looking back at them also terrified.

“They said everyone had been accounted for but some cats had sadly died. I instantly thought that one of them would be mine but luckily they were able to find her alive.”
