The Girl Scouts of Chicago and Northwest Indiana gathered earlier this month for their first big service project since the onset of the pandemic in 2020.
Lailani Love, 7, writes cards to be included with care packages for homeless people while her mom, Bertedis Cochran, stands behind her during a Girl Scout service project recently in Richton Park.
The Scouts, who ranged from Daisies to Cadets , collected the donations over the last few months and spent time sorting and bagging them at the Richton Park Community Center several weeks ago. At that event, they also wrote and colored cards to recipients.“You want to put, “We’re thinking about you. We care about you,” Jessica Hickman, troop support specialist for the Chicago Area cheerfully told the girls.
The Scouts used funds raised by selling cookies and through other projects to purchase the items to give away. After writing their cards, they scurried around the table, each picking up items from assorted piles of socks, hats, gloves, rain ponchos, water bottles, tissue packets and bags of trail mix, crackers and nuts. They packaged the items in bright colored, lightweight backpacks.
“She’s an only child and I wanted her to be around other kids,” she said. “She likes the meetings and different activities.”
