Gilead Sciences’ antiviral treatment remdesivir had a good day—but it’s still not clear how effective it is against COVID-19
“On the plus side, the preliminary results suggest quicker recovery time for people who received remdesivir,” infectious disease researcher and UCSD Associate Dean of Global Health Sciences Dr. Steffanie Strathdee toldin an email. “On the down-side, the survival benefit was marginal, although it trended in the right direction.”
Fauci said that this set of data will also set NIAID’s standard of care for future drug trials against COVID-19, as well. Trials of future coronavirus treatments, he said, will be judged in part by whether they give patients a shorter recovery time than patients who take remdesivir. “The study demonstrates the potential for some patients to be treated with a 5-day regimen,” Gilead’s chief medical officer Merdad Parsey said in a statement. “Which could significantly expand the number of patients who could be treated with our current supply of remdesivir.”in trading of Gilead’s stock, which spiked sharply on the news. It closed at $83.14, up about 5.7%, and at the time of publication the price was going up in after-hours trading.
