James Franklin scores another big fish from New Jersey in Newark four-star DB Omari Gaines.
, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound sophomore defensive back with nine offers, who spent last season at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, has periodically “rode shotgun” on trips to Penn State since 2018, and has a relationship with Coach Franklin spurred by Franklin’s rapport with his fatherOmari recently visited Penn State with new coach Naz Oliver, who has taken the reigns, and who Omari texted while listening in on position meeting with Terry Smith’s DB’s to inform he’d found his college home.
“He’s an all-around athlete,” said coach Naz Oliver, who has known Omari since a young chid. “Like I told coach Franklin, I can see a lot of Joey Porter Jr. in Omari. He’s really long, lanky, can turn and run with guys. He’s tough at the line of scrimmage and he’s a thumper. Omari has competed in prospect camps at Penn State since he was in the eighth grade, and visited the school unofficially with his family and his Brick City alums numerous times.
