A giant African land snail — described as 'one of the most damaging snails in the world' — was detected in Florida earlier this month, forcing a quarantine on parts of Broward County, authorities say.
Under the quarantine, it’s illegal to move the snail or move plants, compost, soil, or building materials through or from a quarantine area without a compliance agreement.
The creatures also pose “serious health risk to humans” by carrying parasite rat lungwort, or meningitis in humans, the FDACS said. Now a treatment process is underway to “eradicate” the agricultural pest using metaldehyde-based molluscicide, or snail bait. “Snails and slugs that have eaten metaldehyde often seek hiding places, become inactive and begin to die within days,” the department said.
