We chat with Kaleidoscope stars Giancarlo Esposito (quiethandfilms) and Tati Gabrielle about Eric Garcia's unique vision for the series and how they grasped the show's timeline:
Loosely based on a true story, Netflix's Kaleidoscope will be available to stream starting the first day of 2023. However, Eric Garcia's latest creation isn't an audience's typical watch. The crime anthology is a non-linear series, meaning that viewers will experience the episodes in different orders while ultimately reaching the same conclusion. Taking place over the span of a 25-year heist, each of the 8 installments reveals another piece of an elaborate puzzle.
Tati Gabrielle: I just was very excited by it. As an audience member on my own, I'm always excited by stories that make me think, stories that I have to do a little bit more in order to get the gratification of what this piece was. So when I first heard that it was nonlinear, I was like, "Oh, that's awesome.
All of a sudden, I realized that if I were an audience watching a show that was a non-linear format, I would feel like I am making up the story. And so to me, I think it's genius. Because I'm making this movie, it's ownership over what the structure is. I can choose orange, green, white, red, violet, and it gives me the power and the sense that I'm partially telling the story that I want to see. That to me is phenomenal.
Giancarlo Esposito: I was always jealous because the younger minds seem to grasp the timeline a little bit quicker than I did. For me, it was my daughter walking into the room when she visited me for dinner and I had a seven-foot table and [said], "Papa what is all this? What are you doing?" And I have all eight episodes laid out on the table. I'm trying to make a connection.
