'Ghoul Out The Vote' combined Halloween celebrations with a message to increase voter turnout.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On Oct. 29, an event called “Ghoul Out The Vote” took place at Barnette Magnet School with the intention of celebrating Halloween while bringing awareness to low-voter turnout.
From 12:00 to 3:00 p.m., residents were welcomed to join for music, food and civic engagement while learning about the upcoming election. Activities included coloring and costume contest for folks looking to celebrate Halloween, but also mock ballots and information booths for those looking to learn more about the ranked choice voting system and other election information such as which candidates would appear on the upcoming ballot.
There were multiple speakers who focused on the low-voter turnout that had been seen in the municipal election on Oct. 4. Across the board, those that put on the event or were guest speakers made it clear that they believed democracy works best when more people are engaged in elections and other civic duties or events. They also highlighted the importance of making sure everyone’s voice is heard during an election.
The non-partisan event was put on by the Alaska Black Caucus, Native Movement, Fairbanks NAACP Greater Chapter 1001, The Alaska Center Education Fund, Alaskans Take A Stand, League of Women Voters Tanana Valley and Anchorage, the Fairbanks Education Association, the Education Support Staff Association, and Stand Up Alaska.
