What are 'ghost postings'? And should you still apply to them?

Workers trying to cash in on the intense battle for talent are increasingly contending with a frustrating hurdle: “ghost postings.”

A recent survey from Clarify Capital found about 20% of managers have open job postings they don't plan to fill until 2023. About 50% of mangers surveyed say they keep job postings open because they are always open to new people., principal of branding services firm Branding with Chuck, said while the number of ghost postings are already increasing, he thinks it will get significantly worse over the next quarter.

But many companies also keep job postings open to have a list of potential applicants for evergreen positions for which they routinely hire, such as entrepreneurs-level claims adjusters for insurance companies. “The best way for applicants to separate real postings from ghost postings is to look at the date of the posting. The older the posting, the more likely it is for a position that doesn't currently exist,” Catania said.

“The way we work has changed forever, which has made employers wary of continued resignations. This change in employers’ outlooks will increase the likelihood of job candidates finding more ghost postings,” Chapman said.
