Mother's Day without my mum - how I handle the day now she's no longer here
To some mums, Mothering Sunday is just another day. To mine, it was usually described as something along the lines of "commercial gubbins".
In fact, I've found it is getting worse every year, as I approach my sixth one without her. The whole saga has stretched into a month-long, unrelenting reminder that my mum will never be on the end of the phone again.She will never again leave me an animated three-minute voicemail telling me the gist of everything she will then pad out in impressive detail when I call her back. She managed to make the horrifically mundane things in life....sparkle.
Now, I'm not some kind of Mother's Day monster Scrooge, here to dump on those who still have a beautiful mother figure in their life that they can and should spoil rotten on March 19. And I've learnt to brace myself when I go to a supermarket, I avoid the greetings cards and 'seasonal' aisles, but it's the unexpected places that hit like a knife to the already shattered heart.

Let us know in the comments Companies are taking steps to remedy the email issue, with a number of well-known businesses I use regularly who sent out emails asking if I'd rather not receive alerts for certain calendar events.
As I write this, I can feel my eyes welling up, my pupils fighting to see through the familiar blur of tear pools forming, ready to overflow onto my cheeks. "It's been six years, come on, what you crying for?" I'm telling myself, but time merely helps to calm the ripples in the water, and there's always a stone waiting on the shore to disturb the calm once again.
