Make sure your kids are protected by getting a free will written now. October is Free Wills Month so it's the perfect time to get it sorted.Worryingly, half of all parents don't have a will in place, according to research by Austin Lafferty Solicitors.It means they haven't specified who will care for their kids if the worst happens.
Under intestacy rules, your home or other assets would normally pass to your spouse if you're married or in a civil partnership.If you're not married, but live together it's more complicated.If you're separated it could be even messier.For married partners the simplest and cheapest option is normally to get matching 'mirror' wills.
Charities such as Cancer Research, Macmillan, The Children's Society and others also offer this service.
