It will be the first time in PHF history that both finalists will be coached by women.

It will be the first time in league history that both finalists will be coached by women, with Toronto and Ronda Engelhardt with Minnesota. It is the Six’s first trip to the final and, if they win, they will be the first Canadian team to win the Isobel Cup.

“Obviously I think it’s great,” Heaney said. “There’s a lot of talented women coaches out there who know the game, they just never got the chances. Especially years ago when I played, I always had male coaches. But now, I think women are getting the opportunities, they can show they can coach and be successful as well. I think it’s a great accomplishment not only for myself but for Ronda and all coaches out there … If we can lead the way, that’s awesome.

Englehardt mirrors many other women’s coaches who have graduated from highly successful playing careers. She helped the Whitecaps to the 2019 Isobel Cup championship and was one of the top defenceman in history at the University of Minnesota in the early 2000s. The Six will have a say in that. They finished second in the PHF standings as Heaney went through the process of getting to know her players and finding out how to get the most out of them on the ice.
