George Santos4Congress admitted to using stolen checks to police in Brazil: Report

Santos signed two checks from a checkbook belonging to a different man to pay for items in two installments, per documents obtained by CNN.The report says the cashier at the store located in the town of Niteroi, near Rio de Janeiro, reported Santos after the signatures did not match. He admitted to the crime to law enforcement in 2010, according to police documents.

Authorities in the South American country had originally closed the case after they could not locate him, but they now intend to reopen it a decade later after learning of his whereabouts.Previous reporting found that Santos fabricated or made up several aspects of his resume, including claims he worked at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and that he was Jewish. The incoming congressman confirmed in an interview with the New York Post that he had"embellished" his background.

Multiple former politicians, including Santos's predecessor in New York's 3rd Congressional District, have called on him to resign amid the controversy.
