Star Wars’ main character according to Lucas.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Star Wars prequels are some of George Lucas’ most innovative work, and Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace features one of the most unique sequences in all of Star Wars. From the beginning, the majority of Star Wars was filmed in a documentary style, as if Lucas really intended to show what happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
Despite Anakin and Luke being the main characters of their respective trilogies, Lucas actually believed the story of Star Wars was told from the perspective of R2-D2 and C-3PO. When it came to the original trilogy, R2 and C-3PO as the main characters made sense given how A New Hope began with them escaping the Tantive IV with the plans for the Death Star. Almost all the major events in Star Wars were witnessed by R2-D2 and C-3PO.
Phantom Menace Has A Scene From C-3PO's Perspective After Qui-Gon Jinn secures Anakin’s freedom in the middle of The Phantom Menace, Anakin packs up his things and heads out. Before doing so, he briefly talks to his protocol droid, C-3PO, and assures him he won’t be sold. However, Lucas breaks his traditional documentary style and shows Anakin from the first-person perspective of C-3PO.
Anakin saying goodbye to C-3PO came across as comical in The Phantom Menace since Anakin was indifferent to C-3PO’s plight. But the impact of their interaction story-wise is enormous. C-3PO—one of the few characters that will see the entirety of Lucas’ Star Wars saga—was watching Anakin leave to become a Jedi. He didn’t know it, but he was watching Anakin start down the path that would later lead him to become Darth Vader.
Star Wars Has Never Gone To A Droid's POV Since Star Wars: The Clone Wars has a few episodes that feature just droids, and are—ironically—some of Lucas’ favorite Clone Wars episodes. However, Star Wars has almost never shown the story from the first-person perspective of a droid since The Phantom Menace. The fact that George Lucas broke his cinematography style specifically to show Anakin from C-3PO’s perspective helps reinforce the idea that the droids are the main characters of Star Wars.
