Experts say gender-based violence at higher education institutions is an ongoing issue that urgently needs to be addressed and researched. With 26 HIEs and over 2 million students, statistics show that sexual violence is a major problem on campuses, with 20 to 25% of women reporting sexual abuse at universities.

Experts who spoke to News24 said there was not enough attention given to addressing GBV and sexual violence on campuses amid ongoing femicide and rape of students.
