Founded ten years ago, the Gay Gooners (gaygooners) provides a safe space for LGBTQ+ Arsenal fans to come together and attend games as one. They have encouraged other teams to start their very own dedicated clubs tailored to gay supporters 🏳️🌈
Arsenal’s chief executive officer Vinai Venkatesham described the group as ‘true trailblazers and fearless campaigners’.
1990s – Several gay Arsenal fans in GFSN often met prematch at The Gunners pub and postmatch at the Bank of Friendship pub. The circle of friends starts going to away games together and organises tickets 16 February 2013 – official launch of gaygooners. A few friends meet in a box at the stadium. Rainbow version of Arsenal For Everyone logo appears for the first time on pitchside LED boards
April 2015 – fan groups come together to urge an end to homophobic songs sung by a band at Arsenal pubs.May 2015 – A lesbian couple in Milton Keynes become the first GGs members to buy tickets under the Arsenal ticket exchange shared from other members. Using the official Arsenal transfer system, many members have been able to go together and overcome barriers to enjoying games for virtually every Arsenal game home and away.
May 2017 – Scores of members go to Wembley together to see Arsenal beat Chelsea to lift FA Cup. Pub meet-ups and screenings organised for Soho and Manchester. March 2019 – Joe White of gaygooners and Pride in Football organises campaign over surge in homophobia in Polish football.
